A Story of Two Friends

There once were two friends, one was Mr Monk, the other - his friend was Mr Corporate. Mr Monk lived a simple life while Mr Corporate had a hectic schedule and was always flooded with endless work. It's not that Monk wasn't busy - he too worked from 4 AM in the morning until he went to bed at 930 PM. Corporate too started his day at 4 AM, just like Mr Monk, but would finish his day almost every day at midnight.

Mr Monk woke up, meditated, cleaned his premises, watered his plants, made tea and sat with a book - that was his ritual each morning. His friend, Corporate, on the other hand, got out of bed and headed straight to his Laptop or his Blackberry, he replied to his emails promptly, scheduled his juggling day, planned out the tasks for the day, shot out some more emails to his team, headed to work while gulping his breakfast and coffee on his drive to work.

Mr Monk would arrive office at sharp 9 AM every day, and so did his friend - Corporate. Both, the associates in this big company were swamped with equal sets of tasks. Both brought intensity to their work. Yet one worked efficiently, with discipline and with great attention, the other with great effort, worked very hard, pushed his team too. The results produced by these two friends were almost identical.

Mr Monk and his team, usually left the office by 6.30 PM, while Mr Corporate's worked until 9 PM almost every day, his team worked even longer! Mr Corporate would often spend a couple of more hours on his laptop after dinner until he retired to bed. Mr Monk, went home, spent time with his family sometimes would involve himself in preparing a good meal, they ate together, he would then spend an hour or so reading or catching up with the world or watching TV with his family and then retire to bed.

When it was that time of the year of appraisal, and Monk and Corporate were reviewed, the boss had to decide whom to promote, as there was only one position for this newly promoted role. The decision for the boss was quite easy. He simply promoted the one with whom he saw a greater possibility.
