Discipline is about following the rules of the game. That means to be in discipline in my own game I have to follow my own rules. And in any good game rules are constantly reviewed and evolved progressively for the betterment of the game. Therefore discipline is not a destination but rather a journey. One does not achieve discipline; one is in discipline.
Let me put this in the context of life. Let's say a person meditates each morning. Then showing up each morning without fail could be termed as being in discipline from a point of view of the same person who found it difficult to simply get out of bed each morning. Once this becomes easy to achieve, the rules can evolve. Now he graduates to say that I will meditate for thirty minutes each morning. Once that is achieved, he may make a new rule – that I will start my meditation at 5:45 AM. Then maybe getting all the required arrangement in place – the clothes, yoga mat etc ready the previous night. You see, where I am going? There’s no end to this. Discipline is an endless path. And there is a certain slowness on this path to be experienced, to be lived. The rule is to simply be present to this journey.
