In the context of yesterday's post and the latest podcast of Thirteen, let us have a relook at Slowness. Is it about the speed of movement, the pace of getting things done or something else? Slowness is not in the domain of distance, its in the paradigm of space. It is not the speed of doing; it is the way of being. I know so many people in the service industry and are expected to deliver services in the desired time frame. They have to meet the targets, complete projects, provide non-stop seamless service to their customers within the specified time. Yet, they are always in the state of slowness.
What is the opposite of Slowness? It is not fastness. The opposite of slowness is either Overwhelm, or it is boring. The opportunity cost of not being slow is losing peace of mind. When we are slow, we are with ourselves yet immersed in the activity at hand. We lose the sense of time; we lose our sense of ego and identity. There are a larger purpose and meaning at play, larger than ourselves and our stories about ourselves. Often in the race to catch-up with the world around us, we miss looking at the opportunity of time spent in the rat race. Only at the end of the race do we see how running behind something only because everyone else was running was such futile activity. It not just the disappointment with the winning prize, but also the realisation playing someone else's game that bothers.
Being slow gives us time to live and enjoy every moment of life.
