State of Mind

Sharad, on the one hand, is listening to Maayi and getting inspired to live a life devoted to classical music, and on the other hand, is also looking for avenues to get an appreciation for his music. He wants to participate in and win music competitions.

For one particular singing competition, when Sharad starts becoming conscious about his dress, a friend of his says that as a singer, he should not be worried about the dress. On this, Sharad quotes his father saying, 'once you are on stage, everything is performance.

The second conversation of Maayi starts with the focus on the ‘State of Mind” of the artist/singer. Maayi talks about how the form 'Khayal' (a form of Indian classical music) is all about the state of mind of the artist at a particular time, at a particular moment. Maayi adds, one who is unable to stay focus and cannot concentrate cannot sing Khayal with the required depth. It is all about being fully immersed in that ‘raaga’ while singling. One doesn’t know what will happen the next moment while singing. A completely different face of a ‘raaga’ may show up. There is no particular course one can pinpoint to. It just happens. If you want to find the truth of a ‘raaga’ spontaneously, then there is no space for greed, impurity and lies in one’s mind. The discipline and sincerity required to find the truth need not be there in everyone by default. And that is why not everyone can find the truth.

Sharad performs well in the competition. As an observer, we can see his anxiety during the result announcement. He does not win any prize.
