The existence of having something lies in the ability to give that thing. There is no struggle to withhold. There is now ownership and pride. There are no efforts to control. There is no accounting and calculation of how much to give, who to give, what to give. The why to give is already sorted. The why to give lies in why to live. The purpose of generosity is inside the purpose of life itself. The life of a tree is to be a tree to give food for some and shelter for some others. The mere existence of that entity thus stands inside the innumerable possibilities to give.
Generosity in that sense goes beyond the intention of overcoming one's meanness. It is to further the fulfilment of the purpose of life. Generosity is that quality of being a blue sky of existence which is way beyond the dark clouds of thoughts, actions, feelings and emotions. In the presence of the dark clouds of meanness, anger, jealousy and hatred the blue sky might not be visible but if one stays there the blue sky of generosity will emerge slowly. If you are in the slowness of generosity, then it doesn't appear to emerge but rather you experience in it being there always.
