Amongst the top searched personal wellbeing topics of 2020, most topics touch upon one or more of the following - stress, anxiety, frustration, anger, depression. According to a leading newspaper report from 2016, India leads in stress, anxiety and depression so much so that about 70% people between the age 20-45 are dealing with or have dealt with this upheaval! And, therefore, today's post - in alignment with this week's theme 'Manage' - will touch upon the most common terminologies - stress management, anger management, anxiety management etc.
It is important that we address the following mentioned terminologies with utmost priority. Many, have had an emotional ride in the past few months - like never imagined even just a year ago. Many aspire to have the ability to deal with these issues that cause an impediment in one's personal wellbeing.
But, before we begin, let us look at the term 'management'. Management is an act of managing something that is of importance to us. Like seen in yesterday's post, 'manage' comes from a Latin term 'manus' meaning 'hand', and often 'manage' is used in the context of handling things of value. It could be wealth or money, family, relationships, profession and even time (time, however, is a different topic; let us touch that tomorrow).
Therefore, subliminally we are rather opting for stress, anxiety, anger when we choose to manage them. In this realisation, there's an emptiness within.
If 'management' is about managing that which is important or valuable, then is it that stress, anxiety, anger are of great value to us? An enquiry into that, given an insight into what we fundamentally want to mean, is necessary. What we fundamentally want to mean is emotional management. We essentially want to manage our emotions. And, we loosely use the term 'management' in this context without realising. Therefore, subliminally we are rather opting for stress, anxiety, anger when we choose to manage them. In this realisation, there's an emptiness within. Let's pause, and be with this new paradigm, and enquire. Managing our emotions in the manner we wish to will give us freedom.
